I’m tired… This is the first day we’ve rested from the past two days. We went on a road trip to visit family, have some turkey, and to finally do something we’ve talked about for over 10 years. We’ve always wanted to go to Solvang at Christmas time. I know, we’re just a little early, but everyone seems to be getting into it after turkey day. On our way to Solvang, we went out highway 46, and stopped to see the James Dean Memorial at Cholame.

The Memorial is made of stainless steel, and aluminum alloy, and is wrapped around an Oleantheum tree. It is surrounded by a rock garden, and all the rocks therein come from Japan, handwashed and handpolished. The rock garden is surrounded by plaques bearing quotes from Elia Kazan- Director of East of Eden, Antoine De Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince, the poet Lord Byron,Dean’s former drama teacher Adeline Nall, Dean’s favorite authors and Dean Himself. The monument is in the parking lot of the Jack Ranch Cafe. The actual crash site is a half mile east on highway 46, and 200 yards to the west, in the middle of a farm field. The intersection was realigned when the highway was repaved and renumbered back in 1973. The old intersection and the last 8 miles of the highway that Dean traveled are on land that belongs to the State Water Department, and The Jack Ranch, and permission must be obtained to walk or drive the short stretch of old highway. We weren’t able to look in the Jack Ranch Cafe as it was turkey day and they were closed. I’m still sorting through all my pictures from our roadtrip, so i’ll be updating this over the next few days….:) Stay tuned….
It’s kinda cool living next to a movie theater. Every week when new movies come out, we try to walk by to see how they put it on the marquee. Sometimes you see the funniest stuff when reading the new movie titles like, grude2 guardian, or maybe you’d like to see, departed prestige…. Or maybe, you’d like to see saw3 santa clause, or catch a fire borat.
We went to the Embarcadeo to escape cabin fever that we were having. We’ve been sick over the past couple of days and just wanted to drive somewhere we haven’t been to in a while. I suggested the Embarcadero. I wanted to see what type of stuff I could take pictures of, and I made sure I brought a tripod with me as we left late in the afternoon. Here’s the first shot I took while looking for a parking spot:
The next shot is an art sculpture we came across that I call Kelpman running. I think it was just called “Kelp Man”:
The next few shots I took, were taken in the early evening:
Another couple of shots from the model shoot on the USS Ronald Regan
Published November 3, 2006 Photography Leave a CommentI dunno why I’m pondering this, but let me first set this random musing up. My family and I collect and read comicbooks. DC and Marvel, with some Independant publisher’s titles. My oldest son, loves Batman. My second oldest son, loves Superman, my daughter’s really into Supergirl, and my youngest loves the Flash. Our kids range in age, from 11 to 6. The comic store we go to and have a subscription to, So-Cal Comics, here in San Diego, we’ve noticed that our children are the only kids in the comic store. We go just about every other week and there are never any kids in the store… We’ve talked with the owner, and he’s told us that we’re one of the very few families that are customers at his store. I remember when I was my kid’s age and reading comics, that there were few adults in the comics store, except for the owner or employees. Now, it seems there are only adults in the comics stores whenever we go, and the only kids in the store are mine…. Anyhow, this is just a detour from my viewfinder, no big whup…:)
